VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — A huge dip in avocadoes is being blamed in part for a drop in last year’s Ventura County crop values.

The county’s overall crop value slipped 1 percent to $1.84 billion last year, the first decrease in six years.

The Ventura County Star (http://bit.ly/QE5QDZ) berry growers saw huge profits, but they couldn’t make up for revenue losses for tomatoes, celery, cut flowers, nursery stock, peppers and avocados.

Avocados were hardest hit with a 38 percent drop from 2010.

Agricultural Commissioner Henry Gonzales said Tuesday that avocado trees produce every other year and the decrease in value is nothing to worry about.

Strawberries are the county’s No. 1 crop, up 15 percent to $625 million.

Raspberries rose to No. 2 spot with $167 million in revenues, up 11 percent from 2010.
