HONOLULU (AP) -- Christmas trees for the islands are arriving on refrigerated containers from the West Coast.
The largest shipping company that carries goods to Hawaii has been carrying Christmas trees from the Pacific Northwest for more than a century. Matson Navigation Company says this season's first small shipment of trees primarily targeted for store displays and some neighbor island sales arrived Nov. 12. Another shipment arrived Sunday.
Other shipments are expected Saturday and Dec. 3.
The trees will be available to customers Sunday after being inspected by the state Department of Agriculture.
Matson says the trees are loaded onto refrigerated containers at farms in Oregon and Washington. Matson estimates it ships more than 100,000 trees every holiday season.
