Whatcom Humane Society, in Bellingham, Wash., is offering a limited supply of free hay and grain to county residents who need help feeding their livestock.
Coupons for large bales of hay and for bags of livestock grain are available at both shelter locations. The coupons can be redeemed at Kelly Ridge Farm & Garden, 366 Kelly Road.
"Our hope is that by offering emergency supplies of hay and grain to residents in need, farm animals can receive proper nutrition and remain healthy during the cold Whatcom County winter," said Laura Clark, executive director of the Humane Society.
Clark said the Humane Society receives a dramatic increase in calls from residents worried about animals left outside during the winter. This year, the society has cared for goats, horses, sheep and other livestock, many of them surrendered by owners who could not afford to care for them, she said.
Coupons for the hay and grain are available on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at the two shelters, 3710 Williamson Way and 1661 Baker Creek Place.
The program is supported by a donation from Cargill Animal Nutrition, in Ferndale.
