Comment: We are in desperate need of more rain. Pastures are exceptionally dry for this time of year and it’s starting to show in the feeder cattle and the cow-calf market. Less interest in cattle that usually go back to grass. The corn market is really making an impact in the yearling cattle. With the high cost of gain expected to continue they desperately want to buy the feedlot cattle for less. We are now experiencing COVID problems with labor in the packing plants again and it’s backing the cattle up. The organic cows continue to sell extremely well. It’s amazing what competition does for the market.

Comments: Monday’s feeder sale featured over 500 head of cattle, with a good mix of calves and yearlings, and a good run of excellent cows. Slaughter cows were higher by $5-$6 on the average from a week prior, with cows topping out at $73.50 per pound and averaging 64-67 cents per pound. Slaughter bulls were steady, averaging 89 cents per pound and topping out at 91 cents. Feeder cattle were mixed to lower, with concerns about grass causing a drop in the light feeder market. Yearling steers and heifers were steady to higher, with 700-800 weight steers bringing $1.29, with an average of $1.27. Same weight heifers brought $1.19, with an average price of $1.17. 500 to 600 weight steers brought $1.43, with an average of $1.36, while same weight heifers brought $1.33, with an average of $1.26. Next week we’ll have a regular cattle sale, and our next feeder special will be Monday, May 23. If you have any questions or would like to consign, give us a call anytime.
