KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A California trucker faces federal charges in Kansas City after authorities found more than 500 kilograms of marijuana hidden in his truck load of herbicide.
The Kansas City Star reported Friday that 55-year-old Alfonso Rivera-Perez, of Los Angeles, was arrested Monday and charged with possession and intent to distribute marijuana.
Inspectors stopped the trucker at a weigh station in Kearney for several violations and found more than 563 kilograms of marijuana in the tractor-trailer. Authorities said boxes of irregularly stacked herbicide had cellophane-wrapped bundles of marijuana placed around them.
Rivera-Perez told the trooper he was dispatched from Los Angeles to Yuma, Ariz., where he picked up a load destined for Des Moines. He said he did not watch the trailer being loaded and denied any knowledge of drugs in the truck.
