LA GRANDE, Ore. — Lightning and low humidity — the key ingredients for new wildfires — are forecast in Eastern Oregon and Washington through the weekend, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

With the warm and dry conditions, the risk of wildfires is above normal, the agency said in a press release. In response to the heightened risk, fire crews have been pre-positioned to ensure a quick response.

Lightning is expected to begin this week in south-central Oregon, east of the Cascade Range and continue through the area to the far eastern side of the state. All lightning is expected to be from the Cascade crest to the Oregon-Idaho border and in north-central Washington.

These conditions are expected to continue through Aug. 6.
