The University of Idaho Extension will host a free field day on crops, soils and technology from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mountain June 7 at the UI Parma Research and Extension Center, 29603 U of I Lane. Lunch will follow.
Scheduled speakers and topics include J.R. Simplot Co’s. Cody Kramer on cover crops and soil health, UI wheat breeder Jianli Chen on UI spring wheat varieties, Amalgamated Sugar Co’s. Greg Dean on the sugar beet industry, UI precision agriculture specialist Sanaz Shafian with a drone flight demonstration, UI plant pathologist James Woodhall on technologies for plant disease detection and UI plant pathologist Mike Thornton and plant sciences master’s degree candidate Kyler Beck on remote sensing for disease monitoring.
Other scheduled presenters are USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Idaho State Agronomist Travis Youngberg with an NRCS update; UI water management engineer Howard Neibling on efficient irrigation strategies; UI Cropping Systems Agronomist Xi Lang on alternative crops; Idaho Hop Commission representatives Michelle and Dianne Gooding on the industry; UI waste management engineer Lide Chen on a nutrient use survey, and UI cropping systems agronomist Olga Walsh on drones for precision ag, cereal varieties performance, and nutrient and water use in cereals and sugar beets.
