BEND, Ore. (AP) -- Parents in the Bend-La Pine School District are signing a petition to have chocolate and other flavored milks pulled from cafeteria shelves.
The Bulletin newspaper of Bend reports (http://bit.ly/Jrgfyl) that the district offers chocolate milk every day and sometimes has strawberry and root beer milk.
An online petition signed by more than 500 parents and medical professionals claims the sugar contributes to a range of health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and obesity.
But district wellness specialist Katrina Weist says there are no plans to remove flavored milk from schools. She says the benefits of chocolate milk outweigh the potential harm from its added sugar.
