A third Asian giant hornet nest has been discovered in northwest Washington, and the state Department of Agriculture was making plans Friday to eradicate it in the coming days, agency spokeswoman Amber Betts said.
The nest was found by electronically tracking a live hornet to an alder tree in Whatcom County. It’s in the same vicinity as nests that were found and destroyed in August and last October, Betts said.
The department had focused on the area since two hornets were sighted Wednesday.
The department captured a hornet and tied the electronic device to it, leading to the nest’s discovery Thursday evening.
Asian giant hornets prey on a wide variety of species, including honey bees. The hornets are considered a threat to human health and agriculture.
In North America, live Asian giant hornets have been found only in Whatcom County and across the border in British Columbia.
