Leland "Lee" Downing Sr., a well-known cattle rancher in Oregon's Lane County, has died. He was 75.

He died in a wood-cutting accident on Nov. 23 when a maple snag slid off a stump and struck him in the head, according to wire reports.

Downing was a third-generation rancher on his family's farm, which was started in 1908. A lifelong resident of Marcola, Ore., he graduated from Mohawk High School in 1934 and studied agriculture for two years at Oregon State University.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, at Mohawk High School in Marcola. The Major Family Funeral Home is responsible for arrangements.

Downing is survived by his wife, Kathryn, two children and six grandchildren.
