FREEDOM, N.Y. (AP) -- State police say a 27-year-old man has died after going to the aid of a co-worker who was overcome by methane fumes inside a tank trailer on a western New York farm.
Troopers say 46-year-old Edward Kelsch was attempting to clear a blockage inside a vehicle used to spread manure when he was overcome by fumes Tuesday afternoon at the Schwab Family Farm in the Cattaraugus County town of Freedom, 40 miles southeast of Buffalo.
Police say Timothy Schwab climbed into the tanker and was also overcome by fumes. Troopers say other workers pulled the two men from the tanker.
Schwab was taken to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, where he was pronounced dead.
Kelsch was transported to a Buffalo hospital, where he was in critical condition.
Police say their investigation is continuing.
