A wolf was found feeding on a dead calf near John Day, Ore. State wildlife biologists couldn't determine whether the wolf killed the calf.

JOHN DAY, Ore. — The Grant County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a calf being killed by a wolf on a ranch near John Day on May 16, according to Sheriff Todd McKinley.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials on Wednesday designated the incident as a "possible unknown," one of four categories that can be used when they investigate a possible wolf depredation — that is, when wolves kill or maim domestic animals.
