Local wine and food products will be featured at the Oct. 2 Wine, Cheese and Chocolate: A Taste for Kids' Sake benefit in Eureka, cosponsored by the Community Alliance with Family Farmers and North Coast Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The 5:30 p.m. event, a part of Local Food Month, will include fruit platters from Humboldt County farmers and other food from local businesses.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance through CAFF at 707-444-3255 or visiting the Saturday farmers' market in Arcata.

Convention seeks interns

Young cattlemen are invited to become involved in the California and Nevada cattlemen's and cattlewomen's convention Nov. 11-13 in Reno.

Young people have until Oct. 21 to apply to be an intern at the convention.

UC almond courses Nov. 4

The Almond Pest Management Alliance is sponsoring two training events in November.

The first will be held Nov. 4 at the University of California Kearney Research Center in Parlier and the second will be at the UC Cooperative Extension office in Stockton Nov. 5.

The programs will include presentations and demonstrations of best management practices for controlling insects and disease in almond orchards.

There will be 6.5 hours f continuing education credits available for pest control advisors including 1.75 hours of Laws and Regulations. Registration fee is $45 and includes lunch and course materials.
