Vilsack touts jobs plan, veggies
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack spoke of the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and touted President Barack Obama's jobs plan during a visit here Sept. 26.
Earlier in the day, Vilsack hosted a meeting with business, community and agricultural leaders to explain ways federal, state and local officials could work together to improve economic conditions.
The secretary used a local produce distribution facility as a backdrop to highlight the government's new food icon, called MyPlate, and announce a two-year public outreach plan to encourage healthy eating.
Hall of fame honors five
STOCKTON, Calif. -- The 27-year-old San Joaquin County Agricultural Hall of Fame will honor five new inductees during a banquet here Oct. 13.
Allan R. Fetters, Ralph and Denene Lucchetti, Bruce A. Mettler, and Stanley Seifert will be recognized for their contributions to agriculture and the community. In addition, inductee John D. Chlappe will be honored posthumously.
The annual Agricultural Hall of Fame Banquet will be held at the Robert J. Cabral Ag Center, 2101 East Earhart Ave. Tickets are $40 each and must be paid in advance.
