HAMILTON, Mont. (AP) -- The reopening of Montana Rail Link's Bitterroot Valley spur line is on hold after Ravalli County commissioners withdrew an offer to fund part of the line's operations.
The line has been closed since June after a culvert washed out part of the track.
Montana Rail Link has said it would not reopen the line without enough guaranteed revenue to break even.
The Ravalli Republic reports (http://bit.ly/HnsF8e ) the county commission had agreed to make up the estimated $62,000 shortfall, but put the offer on hold at Wednesday's meeting.
Chairman Matt Kanenwisher says the company told him that if revenues were more than expected, the public money would go toward the company's profit for the company
The commissioners say taxpayer money can't go to subsidize profit for a private company.
