The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will try to remove one wolf from a pack attacking cattle in northeast Washington.

Fish and Wildlife Director Kelly Susewind authorized lethal control Wednesday in response to repeated attacks on cattle by the Dominion pack in Stevens County.

The pack has killed three and injured six calves since July 19, according to the department.

The livestock producer has tried to prevent the predations by patrolling around cattle. Cattle Producers of Washington range riders will step up patrols, according to Fish and Wildlife.

Nevertheless, the pack likely will continue to attack cattle, the department concluded. Susewind agreed that removing one adult wolf may change the pack’s behavior.

Fish and Wildlife has not removed a wolf this year.
