Manual aims to help keep nurseries clean
PORTLAND -- The Oregon Association of Nurseries has released a manual to help growers improve pest and disease prevention in their nursery and greenhouse operations.
The Safe Procurement and Production Manual emphasizes a proactive approach to managing for pest prevention.
The manual includes checklists that nursery and greenhouse operators can use when developing what is known as a "systems approach" to minimize threats from insects and diseases.
The systems approach targets areas of highest risk. It has been adopted for pest risk management by several countries since its introduction in 2002, according to the manual.
The 96-page manual was co-authored by Oregon State University plant pathologists John Griesbach and Jennifer Parke, Washington State University plant pathologist Gary Chastagner, and USDA Agricultural Research Service scientist Niklaus Grunwald.
Also contributing were former OAN Executive Director John Aguirre and current OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone. It was edited by Curt Kipp, publications manager for OAN.
The manual was funded by a USDA specialty block grant. It is available through OAN.
