Chemeketa Community College's horticulture program is starting its third year with more faculty, new classes in ecological horticulture and -- thanks to a $5,000 donation from Oregon's nursery industry -- upgrades to its propagation greenhouse.
"It's a pleasure to recognize (Chemeketa Director of Agriculture Programs) Dr. (Craig) Anderson and his staff and his vision to see the industry is going to need an educated workforce," said Val Tancredi of Stettler Supply Co.
Tancredi is one of seven board members of the Oregon Association of Nurseries' Willamette Chapter, which donated the money.
Tancredi also praised Anderson for seeking and using input from the industry. Several nursery producers serve on an advisory board that helps develop the horticulture program's curriculum.
"They've enlisted input from the industry from the beginning," Tancredi said. "When a student comes out of the program, we know what that credential is worth."
Anderson said the increased emphasis on horticulture was a natural for the college's agriculture program. More than 36 percent of the Oregon nursery industry's farmgate value is generated from nurseries in the college's three-county service area -- Marion, Polk and Yamhill counties, he said.
Horticulture classes at Chemeketa start Sept. 27. For more information, call 503-399-5139.
