As May comes to a close the Chelan FFA are putting the wraps on another successful year. Two big events mark the end of the FFA year—State Convention and Parent-Member Banquet.
Twenty-three members traveled to Pullman and the campus Washington State University for the 83rd Washington State Convention competing Prepared Public Speaking, Job Interview, Agriculture Issues Forum, Farm Business Management, Creed Speaking, Meats Evaluation, and First Year CDE on May 8th-12th.
Apolinar Blanco and Lupe Villasenor competed in both Prepared Public Speaking and Job Interview. Apolinar was 3rd in both his sub-state flights. Lupe was 4th in her flight in Public Speaking and 3rd in Job Interview. The Agriculture Issues forum team of Jake Straub, Ryan Gerber, Javier Rivera, Ian Cowell, Apol Blanco and Bobby Hanson placed 3rd in their flight, as well. Erick Straub was 5th in his flight of sub-state in Creed Speaking, The Meats team of Jake Straub, Ryan Gerber, Chad Miller, Derek Ahl, and Javier Rivera placed 14th. The Farm Business Management team of Ian Cowell, Sean Hess, Jesus Rodriguez, Zach Burchett, and Cory McClellan came in 13th. Two first year teams competed both placing 2nd in their respective flights. The teams were Thomas Armstrong, Anna Doty, Sarah Goyne, and Josie Gallup and Dane Schwartz, Erick Straub, Michael Tutino and Amanda Reeves.
Lupe Villasenor also was a State Officer Candidate, after two grueling days of tests and interviews she was selected as one of the top 10 candidates. She gave her speech on Saturday afternoon but came us just short of being elected on Saturday night.
Also on Saturday night, Lupe was honored as the District VII Star in Placement and a Star Placement Finalist. Chad Miller was the honored as the District VII Star in Agribusiness and was selected as the Washington State Star in Agribusiness. They were featured in a slide show and honored with their parents, as well.
On Saturday afternoon, Jesus Rodriguez was honored with a gold award and 2nd place plaque for the Placement in Tree Fruit Production Proficiency Award. Seven members—Lupe Villaenor, Chad Miller, Sean Hess, Zach Burchett, Ian Cowell, Michael LaHaye, and Derek Ahl all received their State FFA Degree. The Chapter also received the 100% Membership Award and a Gold National Chapter rating.
Our FFA Advisor, Rod Cool, was honored on Friday as he served as the State Advisor during opening ceremonies for the Second General Session.
On May 21st, the chapter held the 83rd Annual Parent-Member Banquet in the CHS Commons. At the banquet the chapter honored the community members and parents who assisted the Chapter throughout the year, presented achievement awards to members and proficiency awards to members.
The evening started off with a turkey dinner prepared by Chelan FFA Alumnus and former chapter vice-president, Tim Chism, the executive chef at Wild Fin in Issaquah with help from Vicki Simmons from CHS Foodservice, and Cindy Vierya CHS Culinary Arts Student.
41 Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to community members, parents, and school staff who were identified by members as strong supporters of the Chelan FFA.
Andy Reeves, Wade and Jenae Miller, Scott and Beth Dietrich, Joe and Pam Ahl, Rick and Janice LaHaye, Anne Hess, Reynaldo Villasenor, and Maria Olivera all received the Honorary Chapter Degree from the Chapter.
Dane Schwartz received the Star Greenhand Award. Bobby Hanson was the Outstanding Sophomore Member. Apol Blanco was selected as the Outstanding Junior Member. Derek Ahl received the Agriculture Mechanics Award. Kevin Soto was the Horticulture Award winner. Ian Cowell earned the Natural Resource Award. Chad Miller was the Chapter Star in Agribusiness. And Lupe Villasenor was the big winner of the night earning the Star Chapter Farmer, Livestock Production Award, DeKalb Outstanding Senior Member, Chapter Leadership Award, and the Chelan FFA Alumni Scholarship Award.
The 2013-14 Chelan FFA Officer Team is President Apolinar Blanco, Vice-President Jake Straub, Secretary Dane Schwartz, Treasurer Javier Rivera, Reporter Bobby Hanson, and Sentinel Ryan Gerber.
The 83rd year of Chelan FFA closes and 84th year begins. Members will haul their fair animals to the pre-weigh and tagging for the Chelan County Fair on Saturday May 1st and then will be traveling to the District VII Leadership Camp at Lost Lake in Northern Okanogan County on June 13 and 14.
