Thirty members of the Chelan FFA will travel to the campus of Washington State University to take part in the 82nd Washington State FFA Convention. Members will be competing in State FFA Career Development Events, accepting individual and chapter awards, attending leadership workshops and convention sessions.
The Chelan Chapter will be represented in eight career development events. Apolinar Blanco qualified in two events by winning the District VII Prepared Public Speaking CDE and Job Interview CDE. Dylan Sherman will compete in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking CDE. James Blixt, Jake Straub, and Javier Rivera will compete in the Marketing Plan CDE. Ellie Vold, Romaine Doty, and Mikki Litterell will compete in the Agriculture Communications CDE. Jake Straub, Chad Miller, Derek Ahl, Javier Rivera, and Sam Lorenz will compete in the Meats Evaluation CDE. Two teams will represent Chelan in the First Year Member CDE. The first year teams are Jenny Barajas, Bobby Hanson, Clieder Guillen, Jesus Rodriguez, Seyderra Copas, Lexi Montano, Rhiannon Davis, and Kali Van Rensum. Two teams will also represent Chelan in the Farm Business Management CDE, they are Lupe Villasenor, Crystal Avila, James Blixt, Billy Poppie, Michael LaHaye, Cory McClellan, Ian Cowell, Gage Henry, Joses Rosas, Dylan Sherman and Sean Hess.
Five members will earn the State FFA Degree, the highest degree that can be bestowed by the State Association. To earn this degree members must have been a member of the FFA for at least two years, have completed 360 hours of agricultural education coursework worked at 1000 hours at the Supervised Agriculture Education project and earned or invested $2500. Gage Henry, James Blixt, Billy Poppie, Robert Ihlandfeldt and Edgar Echerverria all qualified for and earned their State FFA Degrees. In addition, Edgar Echerverria was selected to compete for the State Star in Agribusiness Award and will represent District VII. He will be featured during the final session of convention on Saturday night at 6:30 PM in the Stars Over Washington Presentation.
Three graduated Chelan FFA members will also be recognized for qualifying for their American FFA Degrees. Sammi Jo Cool, Jorge Villasenor, and Zaren Sandum completed and submitted their American Degree applications earlier this spring and met the qualifications of three years of continuous membership, 100 hours of community service, 2000 hours of work and earned or invested $7500 in their SAE project.
The Chelan Chapter also earned a Gold Rating in the National Chapter Award program which measures FFA Chapters against each other based on their Program of Activities and how they meet the FFA Mission Statement.
The convention also marks the end of a year of service for former Chelan FFA President and current Washington State FFA President Sammi Jo Cool. She has spent the past year representing the Washington State FFA Association all around the country and serving as an ambassador for the Washington Agriculture Industry. She traveled over 50,000 miles, putting on leadership trainings and workshops in over 80 schools, testifying at the legislature, representing the members on boards, manning trade show booths, and inspiring members. She will give her retiring address during the fourth and final session of the 82nd Washington State FFA Convention on Saturday May 12th starting at 6:30 PM.
