Casey Palmer of Canyon County, Idaho, received the state Idaho Angus Auxiliary Black Angus Carcass $100 cash award and plaque at the Annual Gem State Angus Banquet in Twin Falls recently.
Palmer's Black Angus steer had a live weight of 1,185 pounds and carcass weight of 699 pounds. The steer had a ribeye area of 12.5 inches, backfat measurement of .4 inches, yield grade of 2.46, quality grade of prime and average daily gain of 2.5.
Sweet Hills Farms of Nampa received the Top CAB Carcass breeder award.
Clay Anderson of Glenns Ferry received the state Idaho Angus Auxiliary Black Angus Ultrasound Carcass $100 Cash Award and plaque.
Anderson's Black Angus cross steer had a live weight of 1,275 pounds. The steer had a ribeye area of 16 square inches, backfat measurement of .68 inches, estimated yield grade of 2.09 and quality grade of choice.
Lazy A Ranch of King Hill received the Top CAB Ultrasound Carcass breeder award.
The Idaho Angus Association and Auxiliary also awarded three scholarships to Idaho students.
Receiving $500 is Jared Herbst of Salmon, Idaho, the son of Steve and Jana Herbst. He plans to attend Brigham Young University-Rexburg Idaho and major in agricultural business.
Also receiving $500 is Michael Wiseman of Filer, Idaho. He is the son of Andy and Sally Wiseman. Michael plans to attend the College of Southern Idaho or University of Idaho and major in agricultural business.
Honorable mention and receiving $100 is Isaiah Silkwood of Emmett, Idaho, the son of Tim and Renae Silkwood. He plans to attend the Institute of Children's Literature and major in creative writing.
Awards are based on carcass data from county fairs. Forty-two steers from five counties in Idaho participated in all the contests. The criteria for judging the contest are the Certified Angus Beef formula.
