California FFA elects new leaders

FRESNO, Calif. -- Nipomo High School student Riley Nilsen was elected state FFA president on the closing day of the annual state FFA leadership conference.
Serving with Nilsen will be Valerie Canas of Santa Maria, state FFA vice president; Gabrielle Franke, Galt, state FFA secretary; Gage Willey, East Nicolaus, state FFA treasurer; Sheldon Overson, McArthur, state FFA reporter and Hunter Berry, San Jacinto, state FFA sentinel.
The conference's 3,000 delegates also voted on ballot proposals, passing one that allows FFA regions to select their representative to the state FFA executive committee rather than allowing the regional president to serve.
Star awards were presented to the top student in each of four areas related to production agriculture.
California's Star Farmer for 2013 is Roy Yates from the Lodi-Central FFA chapter. This award recognizes the top agriculture program as well as leadership skills. Yates maintains a cow-calf operation.
Travis Clark from the Tulare FFA chapter is the California Star in Agribusiness. His project consists of cutting and selling firewood.
Matthew VanderPoel from the Tulare FFA chapter is the California Star In Ag Placement, an award that recognizes excellence in a work setting. VanderPoel works on his family's 1,200 cow dairy operation.
California's Star in Agriscience is Jillian Drake of the Fallbrook FFA chapter. She serves as an intern to a citrus facility where research to prevent disease and invasive species is conducted.
