Chelan Competes in WVC Invitational Apple Judging Event

Seven members from the Chelan FFA traveled to the campus of Wenatchee Valley College to take part in the 8th annual WVC Invitational Apple Judging Event.  The event is a friendly contest put on by the students and staff of the WVC Tree Fruit program as part of their annual Apple Tasting event.  Students met with WVC Agriculture Program students and staff members, tasted over 70 varieties of apples, toured the facility, and took part in the kickoff event to FFA apple judging season.  Chelan members had to identify both beneficial and harmful insects, identify varieties, and complete a fruit maturity problem.  The Chelan team won the event for the eighth year in a row.

Apolinar Blanco had the high individual score missing only one point.  Jake Straub was second and Derek Ahl third.  Other Chelan members participating were Lupe Villasenor, Javier Rivera, Jesus Rodriguez, and Bobby Hanson.  Chelan members made up 6 of the top seven scores.

Chelan FFA Apple judges will compete at Wenatchee and Manson in practice contests before the District VII Apple CDE on Tuesday November 20th and the Washington State FFA Apple CDE  on December 5th in Yakima at the Washington State Horticultural Association Annual Meetings.
