Report: Up to $1.2 billion to restore Oregon streams

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon environmental authorities have taken their first look at the cost of restoring streamside vegetation in the Willamette Valley that has been harmed by farming, forestry and urban development.

The picture is not good. A report issued Thursday by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality estimates it would cost $593 million to $1.2 billion to restore and clean up runoff pollution on 96,000 acres.

About 70 percent of that is on farm and ranch lands, and 15 percent within urban areas.

The report was done for a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency survey on what is needed to clean up the nation's watersheds.
