Record yields forecast for La. rice & sorghum

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Louisiana's rice and sorghum crops are on track for record yields, and soybeans could have the second-highest yield on record.

Louisiana Field Office director Nathan Crisp says rice production is forecast at 35.5 million hundredweight from 555,000 acres, with yield per acre forecast at 6,400 pounds. That would be up 100 pounds per acre from last year's record.

U.S. rice production is expected to hit 245.9 million hundredweight, up 12 percent from last year. The yield, forecast at a record 100 bushels per acre, up 18 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is expected to total 40 million bushels in Louisiana, up nine percent from 2009. Yield is forecast at 40 bushels per acre, up one bushel from last year.
