Agency: Make it easier to sell ID endowment land

BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Idaho land managers aim to change the state's Constitution to make it easier to unload land managed to benefit public schools.

The Department of Land is sponsoring a pair of amendments that it says could help Idaho resolve ongoing disputes over state-leased cottage sites on Payette and Priest lakes.

Deputy Director Kathy Opp says the proposed measures would eliminate an 1890 requirement to hold a public auction for state endowment lands.

They'd also let people buy more than 320 acres of endowment land and 160 acres of university property at one time.

The changes, to be considered Friday in the Senate State Affairs Committee, were recommended by developers, real estate brokers and bankers that advised the agency.

Two-thirds of the House and Senate must back the proposals and voters must approve them on the ballot in November.
