SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Fishermen furious over water diversions they blame for the decline in California's chinook salmon are calling for tighter controls on pumping from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Reps. George Miller, D-Martinez, and Mike Thompson, D-Napa, joined anglers at a "Salmon Summit" in San Francisco on Wednesday.

They say two years of canceled salmon fishing off the California coast has resulted in the loss of $2.8 billion and 23,000 jobs.

Miller says Central Valley farmers receive the water they need at the expense of salmon.

The farmers say the pumps are not solely to blame for the salmon's decline, and that other environmental factors are also contributing.

Federal regulators will announce this month whether a short commercial salmon season will be allowed this year.
