CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) -- Two Wyoming Air National Guard transport planes are headed home to Cheyenne after more than a week of firefighting duty in Idaho and Utah.

The C-130 planes are specially outfitted to drop up to 3,000 gallons of fire retardant slurry. The planes are being called back now that wildfire activity has died down somewhat.

Six such planes have been fighting fires from Hill Air Force Base, in Utah, and Boise Air Terminal, in Idaho. The other four planes are from national guard and reserve units in California and Colorado.

The planes are a joint program of the military and U.S. Forest Service.

A total of eight such planes were available nationwide before a North Carolina Air National Guard C-130 crashed in the Black Hills on July 1.
