Washington pear crop down from last year

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) -- People often think of the Yakima Valley for its wine-grape crops or apples.

It's also one of the most productive pear-growing regions in the country.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports most of the Bartlett pears are in and orchards are harvesting D'Anjou and Bosc pears.

Most of the Yakima Valley pears are Bartletts that go to three canneries in the valley.

Growers report this year's crop is 10-to-15 percent smaller than last year's because of a cool spring, and prices for cannery pears are up.
