4 charged with stealing from Bozeman-based dairy

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) -- Three former managers and a former bookkeeper at a Bozeman-based dairy cooperative have pleaded not guilty to using company credit cards to make more than $100,000 in unauthorized purchases.

Michael E. Monforton, Jeffery N. McCown, Jeanette S. McCown, and Scott M. McCown, all of Bozeman, each pleaded not guilty in federal court Tuesday to conspiracy and 10 counts of fraud while they worked for Country Classic Dairies.

Prosecutors say between October 2007 and December 2008, Monforton and the McCowns used company credit cards to pay for such expenses as car payments, ski passes, house boat rentals and electronics. At the time, Monforton, now 51, was CEO of the dairy cooperative, Jeffery McCown was a manager, Jeanette McCown was a bookkeeper and Scott McCown was a shop manager.

Prosecutors say that in each case, the expenditures were "mis-coded" in the company's books.

It was unclear from the indictment if and how the McCowns are related.
