Perdue, Maryland grower sued over chicken farm runoff

BERLIN, Md. (AP) -- Two environmental groups say they have filed suit against Perdue Farms and an Eastern Shore grower they say are polluting the Pocomoke River and Chesapeake Bay.

The Assateague Coastkeeper and Waterkeeper Alliance say they filed suit Monday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore against Perdue and the Hudson Farm, a contract grower in Berlin.

The groups say the filing follows the failure of the Hudson Farm and Salisbury-based Perdue to correct violations on the farm during a 60-day period after the groups served notice of intent to file suit.

Perdue Farms spokesman Luis Luna said the company would not comment on pending litigation. A call by The Associated Press seeking comment from Alan Hudson of Hudson Farms was not immediately returned.
