KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) -- Gov. Ted Kulongoski says he expects to sign a drought declaration for the Klamath Basin next week, but it will not be enough to keep farmers from hard times.
Kulongoski traveled to Klamath Falls to hear from federal biologists still working on how much of this year's short water supplies will be needed for endangered suckers in Upper Klamath Lake and threatened salmon in the Klamath River.
He also heard from farmers, agricultural businessmen and the Klamath Tribes.
The governor says the drought declaration will trigger state and federal programs to help farmers, but there is not enough to meet all their needs.
Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley have sent a letter asking the Obama administration for additional aid.
