26 members of the Chelan FFA traveled to the campus of Washington State University to take part in the 82nd Washington State FFA Convention. Members competed in State FFA Career Development Events, accepted individual and chapter awards, attending leadership workshops and convention sessions.
The Chelan Chapter competed in eight career development events. Apolinar Blanco was 4th in his flight in the State Prepared Public Speaking Prelims and 4th in his flight of State Job Interview Prelims. Dylan Sherman was 5th in his flight Extemporaneous Public Speaking CDE Prelims. James Blixt, Jake Straub, and Javier Rivera were 3rd in their flight Marketing Plan CDE Prelims.. Jake Straub, Chad Miller, Derek Ahl, Javier Rivera, and Sam Lorenz ended up 14th in the Meats Evaluation CDE. Two teams will represent Chelan in the First Year Member CDE. The First Year CDE team of Bobby Hanson, Clieder Guillen, Jesus Rodriguez were 3rd in their flight in the Prelims. Seyderra Copas, Lexi Montano, Rhiannon Davis, and Kali Van Rensum placed 2nd in their flight in the First Year CDE prelims. James Blixt, Ian Cowell, Sean Hess, Cory McClellan, and Zach Burchett made it on stage and earned the 8th place plaque for Farm Business Management CDE. The team of Billy Poppie, Michael LaHaye, Jose Rosas and Jesus Rodriguez and Mikki Litterell placed 11th overall.
Five members earned the State FFA Degree, the highest degree that can be bestowed by the State Association. To earn this degree members must have been a member of the FFA for at least two years, have completed 360 hours of agricultural education coursework worked at 1000 hours at the Supervised Agriculture Education project and earned or invested $2500. Gage Henry, James Blixt, Billy Poppie, Robert Ihlandfeldt and Edgar Echerverria all qualified for and earned their State FFA Degrees. Edgar was the District VII Star in Agribusiness he was featured on stage Saturday night during the Stars Over Washington segment of the 4th general session.
Three graduated Chelan FFA members were recognized for qualifying for their American FFA Degrees. Sammi Jo Cool, Jorge Villasenor, and Zaren Sandum completed and submitted their American Degree applications earlier this spring and met the qualifications of three years of continuous membership, 100 hours of community service, 2000 hours of work and earned or invested $7500 in their SAE project.
The Chelan Chapter received a plaque for 100% Membership and National Chapter Award. In addition, Enrique Diaz received a $500 award on behalf of the chapter from the Capital Press the regional agriculture weekly for submitting the best series of press releases to the newspaper. Rod Cool, Chelan Chapter Advisor, and his wife Cherrie received the Honorary State Degree.
The convention marked the end of a year of service for former Chelan FFA President and current Washington State FFA President Sammi Jo Cool. She did the Chelan Chapter proud during the convention doing an exceptional job as president. Her retiring address on Saturday night didn’t leave too many dry eyes in the over 3000 members and guests in attendance.
