The Chelan FFA has been traveling for the last few weeks preparing for the Apple Judging CDE Season and competing in Ag Mech, State Tractors, and State Potato CDEs.
Chelan Traveled to Tonasket on Wednesday November 6th for an Apple Judging Preparation CDE and Agriculture Mechanics CDE . members completed the Apple CDE and for the first go of the year they did pretty well with top honors going to Sr. Jake Straub.
In the Ag Mech CDE members were required to build a Gate hinge using arc welding and precision drilling skills and prepare a gate latch using gas welding skills. Hyatt Johnson was 4th in the Arc Welding and Hayden Habich was 10th. On the Gas Welding Michael Tutino was 2nd, Jake Straub 3rd, Logan Stocker 5th and Chris Truini was 6th.
On the November 7th, members traveled to Wenatchee Valley College for the Apple Tasting Open House and Invitational Apple Judging CDE. 6 Chelan members attended and placed 1-6th in the CDE with Apolinar Blanco taking top honors followed by Jake Straub, Jesus Rodriguez, Bobby Hanson, Dan Schwartz, and Dalia Hernandez. The Chelan FFA has won this contest each year since its inception 8 years ago. The members met with WVC Agriculture Education Department staff Leo Garcia, George Ruddell, and Francisco Sariemento and with Horticulture program students to learn more about the agriculture classes offered by at WVC.
On November 8th, members traveled to Moses Lake to compete in the Washington State FFA Tractor Operators Career Development Event and the Washington State FFA Potato Grading CDE.
The Tractor Drivers have to take and 50 question objective test, a tractor parts identification team test, and then drive a course. Members have to pull out of a set of cones and with a tractor and trailer that is set up at 25 feet in length in tandem. Then back through a course of 5 cones then come forward through the cones and then back into a parking stall with 6 inches of clearance and stop no more than 6 inches from the back of the stall. All under 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
Competitors are penalized for rubbing or knocking over a cone/marker, unnecessary changes of direction, riding the clutch, riding the brakes, reckless driving and 1 point per second for runs over time. The Chelan Team of Jake Straub, Michael Tutino and Ben Lorenz placed 9th in the state. And the team of Logan Fifer and Ken Housley were 15th.
The Potato Grading CDE competitors have to grade potatoes as US No. 1, No. 2, or cull based on industry grading standards, identify blemishes, judge seed potatoes, and give a set of oral grading on 10 potatoes in less than 2 minutes giving 5 attribute descriptions for each potato. The team of Bobby Hanson, Jenny Barajas, Stephanie Olivera, Apolinar Blanco and Erick Straub earned a 15th place finish.
Chelan FFA members traveled to Wenatchee on the evening of November 20th for their last preparatory Apple CDE before they play for banners, trophies, and cash awards. Members did very well and will compete in the District VII Apple CDE hosted by the Chelan FFA at the Manson Grange on Monday November 25th.
Three teams from Chelan will play for the traveling trophy sponsored by the Lake Chelan Fieldmans’ Association and the $500 scholarship to the individual winner sponsored by the Chelan FFA Alumni. Chelan will look to defend their District Trophy for the 10th year in a row as they compete in the 8 practicum areas. Following the District VII Apple CDE, they will travel to the Washington State FFA Apple Judging CDE held at the Washington State Horticulture Association Annual Meetings at the Wenatchee Convention Center on Wednesday December 4th.
Other Upcoming Chelan FFA Activities include unloading Christmas Trees for the Lake Chelan Lions Club on December 4th, Chapter Leadership Retreat @ the NCW Sportsmens Clubhouse in Washington Creek on Friday December 6th, District VII FFA Night at the Wenatchee Wild also on December 6th. The 41st Annual Chelan FFA Toy Drive all throughout the first 3 weeks of December, concessions at the Retro Night Basketball Game on December 14th, and our Holiday Open House on Thursday December 19th.
