Rural legislators want Nike-like deals
What's good for urban businesses should be good for rural businesses, legislators say.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Legislators from rural Oregon say they’ll press next year to get favorable tax treatment for small business like Nike and Intel have gotten.
Last year, the Legislature guaranteed Nike its beneficial tax structure won’t change for 30 years, and Nike promised a major expansion in Oregon.
Earlier this month, Gov. John Kitzhaber extended similar terms to Intel.
One lawmaker, Republican Rep. Greg Smith of Heppner, tells the Bend Bulletin (http://bit.ly/1hz9iLj) the legislation caused hurt feelings among lawmakers from rural areas, who say small businesses could use the same sort of tax certainty the big companies got.
House Republican Leader Mike McLane of Powell Butte says it’s too early to say how the legislation would be crafted, but it could involve smaller job-creation commitments.
