POINT REYES, Calif. — A dairy farm and cheese company will be given the 2013 California Leopold Conservation Award, which recognizes landowners’ stewardship and management of natural resources.
Bob Giacomini and his four daughters own and operate Giacomini Dairy and Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co., in coastal Marin County, where the family began milking cows in 1959.
They also operate The Fork, a culinary center focused on education and entertainment for visitors at the farm.
The operation was chosen from among three finalists for the Leopold Conservation Award, which is given in eight states each year in honor of noted conservationist Aldo Leopold. California’s award is co-sponsored by the California Farm Bureau Federation, the Sand County Foundation and Sustainable Conservation.
Giacomini will be given a crystal award depicting Leopold and a check for $10,000, according to a news release. The award will be presented during the CFBF’s annual meeting Dec. 9 in Monterey.
