Hotshot firefighter fatally hits colleague
CAMPTONVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a wildfire firefighter lying in a road was fatally struck by a car driven by a colleague in rural Northern California.
The California Highway Patrol says a motorist traveling eastbound on Marysville Road in Yuba County early Saturday morning spotted 32-year-old Michael Kelly lying in the westbound lane about three miles from Camptonville, Calif. The motorist flashed his high-beam signals in a failed attempt to warn a 2002 Hyundai Accent with six passengers and driven by 26-year-old Andrew Gruenberg that it was on a collision course with Kelly. Kelly was struck by the Hyundai and pronounced dead at the scene.
Gruenberg told authorities he believed he ran over an animal. CHP says alcohol appears to have been a factor. No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.
