Pomegranate harvest underway in California

Pomegranate harvest is underway in California. Acreage of the fruit has been increasing in the San Joaquin Valley over the past 15 years.

SONOMA, Calif. — The harvest of pomegranates in California is underway, and the fruit is showing up in the produce sections of grocery stores.

Pomegranates are available from August through December, the Pomegranate Council notes. The harvest was about 20 percent complete as of last week, reported the California Farm Bureau Federation.

Acreage of the fruit has increased in the San Joaquin Valley in the past 15 years, and consumer demand has been increasing as well, the CFBF reported. However, surveys have shown that about 80 percent of the U.S. population has never tasted pomegranates.

Health experts consider pomegranates a “superfood,” noting they are high in vitamin C and potassium and low in calories, according to the council.
