Brown signs cattlemen-backed bill to protect ranchers
SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a California Cattlemen's Association-backed bill to maintain legal protections for ranchers who incidentally take threatened or endangered species.
Senate Bill 749 extends assurances that farmers and ranchers will not be punished if they unintentionally kill a protected species in the course of routine agricultural work.
The bill also contains a provision that allows the Department of Fish and Wildlife to use funds generated for agricultural leases for management, the CCA explained in a legislative newsletter.
The legislation was authored by Sen. Lois Wolk, D-Davis.
