Food label campaign attracts big money

The campaign to label some food with genetically modified ingredients continues to attract donors to both sides of the issue. Opponents of measure I-522 have raised $7.8 million and proponents have raised $3.3 million.

SEATTLE (AP) — A recent infusion of cash from seed giant Monsanto has more doubled the war chest for the campaign to reject a statewide measure requiring labeling of genetically engineered foods.

New campaign finance reports show opponents of Initiative 522 have raised $7.8 million, while supporters of food labeling have raised $3.3 million.

Advocates say the measure would allow consumers to make informed decisions about their food. Critics say it would increase costs and burdens for farmers and businesses.

Monsanto has given a total of $4.8 million, making it the top donor working to defeat I-522 this November. The Grocery Manufacturers Association and Bayer Cropscience are also top contributors to the No on I-522 campaign.

Top contributors to the Yes on I-522 include Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, the Organic Consumers Fund and PCC Natural Markets.
