SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man’s pumpkins keep getting bigger and bigger.

Matt McConkie of Mountain Green has set the state record by growing a 1,731-pound pumpkin — 131 pounds more than the record.

He held the previous state record, which he set in 2011 when he grew a 1,600-pounder.

The Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers has organized the annual event since 2005. It was held Sept. 27 at Thanksgiving Point.

McConkie says during their peak growth in late July, pumpkins can gain up to 50 pounds a day. He told KSL the record-breaking pumpkin is so big that it has to be moved by forklift.
