Monsanto beats 4Q profit forecasts

The agriculture products company posted revenue of $2.69 billion in the period.

ST LOUIS (AP) Monsanto Co. (MON) on Wednesday reported fiscal fourth-quarter net income of $20 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the St. Louis-based company said it had profit of 5 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 20 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 38 cents per share.

Monsanto shares have risen 14 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has risen 13 percent. The stock has risen 17 percent in the last 12 months.
