Sutherlin FFA racked up the awards on May 5th and 6th at CDE Days held at the Oregon State University campus. CDE (Career Development Event) Days are two day taken out of the month of May each year for members to take part in different state-level competition events, including Food Science, Livestock Judging and Ag Communications. The competitions were not just for older students, but beginning ones, too. Envirothon is a competition including Soils, Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics and a 5th rotational area (this year it was sustainable agriculture). Meats is where members Identify cuts of meat, and place classes of different cuts and carcasses. Developing a food product, determining problems in food, answering customer letters, and food safety is everything included in Food Science. Ag Communications is about telling the public about agriculture and agricultural issues (press releases, interviews, etc.) Livestock Judging is where people judge different animals based on their muscling, finish, and many other aspects. Vet Science is where members diagnose problems, identify breeds, proper vet technology and proper techniques. Although there was a lot of tough competition, Sutherlin did their best and it definitely paid off for all of their hard work. The Envirothon and Meats teams even qualified for national competitions coming up soon.
